The shorter wavelengths, such as blue light, are scattered more in Earth's atmosphere than longer wavelengths, such as red light. The orange colour leads to lunar eclipses being referred to as a blood moon. This was the second Full Moon to occur in that calendar month, a phenomenon known as a blue moon.
